'Jazz Oscars' testify to thriving scene in Yorkshire and Humber. Freezing cold weather and the prospect of an early start on Tuesday morning didn't deter some 200 guests from attending the first ever JAZZ YORKSHIRE AWARDS at Dean Clough Mills, Halifax on Monday, December 6th 2010.
'Oscar style music was provided by Alan Barnes (sax) and Dave Newton (piano) accompaning the prize giving that was compered by Nigel Slee, the Development Manager of Jazz Yorkshire.
The winning candidates were nominated by the public following a poll organised by Jazz Yorkshire earlier this year. Popular successes included Ronnie Bottomley for Lifetime Achievement Award; 'If Destroyed Still True' as Band of the Year; 'Fill it up with Ghosts' by Trio VD as Album of the Year; and Marsden Jazz Festival as Festival of the Year. Among the surprises was the Pub Venue of the Year (The Phoenix Inn in York) and the Club/Venue of the Year (Jazz at the Spa, Boston Spa).
