Thu, 17 May Denys Baptiste Quartet, Leeds

www.sevenjazz.co.uk
Thu, 17 May at Seven Jazz Leeds - Born in Hounslow, West London of St Lucian parents in 1969, Denys Baptiste is an award-winning jazz artist, composer and educator. An outstanding saxophonist of international acclaim, Denys is renowned for his ability to make complex music accessible, creating mature, melodic, and highly memorable compositions that lodge in the memory on first hearing. Be Where You Are his 1999 debut album on independent jazz label, Dune Records earned him a Mercury Music Prize for An Album Of The Year and a MOBO award for Best Jazz Act. He followed this in 2001 with his second album, Alternating Currents (Dune Records DUNECD05) also receiving great critical acclaim. 2003 saw the release of his third recording/touring project to date: Let Freedom Ring! (Dune Records DUNECD010), an inspirational, uplifting suite combining contemporary jazz, gospel, blues, and Afro-Cuban music with extracts of the epic poem, Mental Fight by Booker Prize-winning author, Ben Okri who narrates on this piece. Commissioned by the Cheltenham Jazz Festival/Jerwood Foundation, Let Freedom Ring! commemorated the 40th anniversary of the historic I Have A Dream oration by American black civil rights activist, Dr Martin Luther King and was nominated for Best Album and Best New Work in the BBC Jazz Awards, for Best Jazz Act in the MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) Awards, and Best Album in the UK Parliamentary Jazz Awards. For the Seven Jazz concert Baptiste returns to a classic quartet format giving audiences an opportunity to engage more intimately with the artist and experience the full might of this saxophone colossus. And although its his most progressive set to date, the music still remains entirely accessible with melodic free-flowing, contemporary compositions. Also very evident is the significant growth in his artistic maturity and stature.

Fri, 18 May Tina May Quartet, Sheffield

www.sheffieldjazz.org.uk
Fri, 18 May at Sheffield Jazz - In 1921 Louis Moyss founded a cabaret-bar in Paris called 'Le Boeuf sur le Toit' that quickly became the centre of the explosive avant-garde arts scene. Here musicians such as Francis Poulenc, Artur Rubinstein, Igor Stravinsky and Eric Satie socialised into the small hours with Maurice Chevalier, Pablo Picasso, Coco Chanel, Serge Diaghilev, Jean Cocteau, Francis Picabia and many other famous names. Tonight's double-bill presents music associated with the famous clientele of this iconic bar. Ensemble 360 demonstrate the powerful impact the arrival of the jazz-age had on the music of Ravel, Stravinsky and Poulenc and celebrate the arrival in Paris of a new kind of classical composer - George Gershwin. The scene then switches to the club itself and the exhilarating mix of music and musicians. Singer Tina May and pianist Nikki Iles, with Julie Walkington (double bass) and Karen Street (accordion) and just a little help from Tim Horton (piano) and Matthew Hunt (clarinet), seamlessly pick up the baton to present a trademark 'Boeuf sur le Toit' mix of Gershwin, Porter, and Bach before moving smoothly on to Tina May's great celebration of Edith Piaf."

"I met Duncan in 2006, when I played part of this suite with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland. Duncan came on tour with us and since then, he's become a friend and a wonderful supporter of my pursuits in music. I'm excited to have the chance to work with him again, and bring this music to a wider audience. Duncan is an incredibly talented composer and I think he's underrated here in the UK - more people should hear this music!" "It's a pleasure for me, and I know the band will sound great. I'm really pleased Kim is doing the suite," says Lamont. When Gil Evans in a magazine interview was asked who his favourite contemporary writer was, he quoted Duncan Lamont. Duncan was born in Greenock, Scotland. He played trumpet with Kenny Graham's Afro Cubists changed to tenor sax became a jazz studio player. Played with almost everyone in show business.
