Meeting through Kristian in Norway, the affinity between him and the American was so close that they arranged a UK tour last year culminating in a set of dates in Ronnies. They enjoyed it enormously, selling out in most venues, and so they are repeating the experience this year to our benefit.Eric has had an almost 20 year career in the US leading on 20 or so CDs and appearing on at least 60 others. His regular quartet features the legendary Harold Mabern. This season has seen Daves reappearance at Wakefield after too long an absence and he is now on his fourth visit the only one specifically booked. What a welcome return though - he has thrilled us again and again on each occasion. We can expect more of the same tonight. A truly powerful rhythm section will drive the whole thing along.Dave OHiggins- tenor saxEric Alexander- tenor saxAndrew McCormack- pianoKristian Leth- drumsArnie Somogyi- bassLatest CD : Sketchbook (Jazzizit) - SKU: JITCD0950

Her previous booking last year had to be cancelled due to the illness, (and subsequent death), of her husband Billy. Miss Verplanck, who already has a discography of 19 CDs to her name, arrives at Grimsby Jazz to present songs from her highly acclaimed latest offering, Once there was a Moon". Marlene has maintained a reputation for the crystal clarity of her voice and her dramatic interpretations, an evening with Marlene Verplanck is a musical experience to be savoured Sheila Tracey Crescendo and Jazz Music UK. She explores all the great standards of Gershwin, Cole Porter and Rogers and Hart to name but a few, with great feeling. Marlene VerPlanck is a straight-ahead singer. She has a wide vocal range, good diction and a pure quality. Paying attention to the lyrics, she sings her stories believably with a jazz-oriented musical background. Marlene has been out there singing long enough to know her audience and delivers the kind of performance that communicates and pleases.

Thu, 25 Mar Anita Wardell Quartet, Leeds

www.sevenjazz.co.uk
Thu, 25 March at Seven Jazz Leeds - If you like real swinging improvising jazz singers then Aninta Wardell is your woman. Steeped in the bebop tradition she scats just like a horn player, with great lines, a great feel and interacts with her band. You won't have heard jazz vocals as exciting as this in a long time. Not only can she improvise like a demon, she can sing a ballad with such tenderness and honesty and you know you are right there with her. One of the UKs most creative and best loved vocalists, her recent album "Kinda Blue" has had rave reviews : "...the singer's mercurial musicality and acute sense of improvisation freedom can at times take the breath away."

Fri, 26 Mar Tom Cawley's Curios, WAKEFIELD

www.wakefieldjazz.org
Fri, 26 March at Wakefield Jazz - Toms first appearance here with this trio brought a standing ovation, which he claimed he was unused to. The taste of the Wakefield audience knows better where pianistic excellence is concerned theyre a discerning lot. Winning Best UK Band in the 2007 BBC Jazz Awards lifted Tom to become an in- demand player in a variety of contexts as well as for his teaching and mentoring (of Kit Downes for example they made an album together). His mature style (developed since leaving Acoustic Ladyland) is best appreciated in the company of these musicians with whom he has now played for 5 years.Only his obsession with Formula One causes one to question his judgement he has even written a tune for Jenson Button (MBE)!"Intricate, witty and profoundly musical, Curios have become, within two albums, the most formidable piano trio in the UK."
