Mission Statement

Jazz Yorkshire's mission is to celebrate and develop jazz in the Yorkshire and the Humber region. We will operate as an open and inclusive organisation embracing the needs and aspirations of all our stakeholders. The key groups of stakeholders are audiences, educators, musicians, promoters and venues.

The key priorities which will deliver these aims are:

  • Champion the creative talents and excellence of jazz musicians living in the Yorkshire and Humber region
  • Support the regional promoter network
  • Make jazz performances accessible to adults with young children, families, young people and children
  • Build new audiences and increase opportunities for participation
  • Develop engagement and increase the depth of experience for those who attend or participate
  • Develop collaborative partnerships within the region to enhance effectiveness
  • Develop a formal collaborative partnership with NWJazzworks and Jazzaction (NE) to establish a very strong and sustainable northern presence in the national and international jazz world

We will achieve these objectives by:

  • Working in partnership with audiences, educators, musicians, promoters and venues
  • Supporting and developing the voluntary and professional promoters of jazz in the region
  • Enhancing the jazz education capabilities across the whole region for all ages and abilities
  • Developing venues and audiences for jazz performance
  • Improving the platforms available to young, new, existing and emerging jazz musicians
  • Coordinating and signposting the provision of information
  • Optimising funding opportunities
  • Working with other regional cultural, educational and community development activities
  • Working with developments in other regions to support our main objectives

Jazz Yorkshire is a company limited by guarantee and is managed by a board of voluntary directors who will be in place until end of March 2013. Nigel Slee was the Development Manager based at Leeds Media Centre until October 2012.

The board of directors meet four times a year and a sub group from the board meet every month.

The current directors of Jazz Yorkshire are: Martin Coultas 'Chair', Steve Crocker (Vice Chair), Peter Connolly, Chris de Saram, John Drury, Kathy Dyson, Louise Gibbs, Richard Hill, Bill Martin, Jamil Sheriff and Andrew Watson.

You can do this by either sending a message via the contact form or by letter to our postal address. Your message / request can then be presented at the next quarterly board meeting.

Jazz Yorkshire was set up in 2003 with support from Arts Council England, Yorkshire with a mission to celebrate and develop jazz scene in Yorkshire and the Humber. Following extensive consultation with the region's jazz community, Jazz Yorkshire works with a range of partners to support jazz development and acts as an advocate for the diverse range of quality jazz activity in the region.
