Jellymould Jazz / Jazz Yorkshire Project 2009
Guidelines for the project
[previous page]We have put down the following to give you an idea of what we are looking for when choosing artists/bands to work with and what Jellymould Jazz is about.
Looking for artists/bands with an original concept
The label is about much more than just about making an album and touring it. We are looking for artists/bands with original concepts for a project, something innovative, something a little bit different.
Current Artists
Our two current artists are poles apart in terms of style but we loved the hypothesis behind what they wanted to achieve and the direction and drive that they had. See www.jellymouldjazz.net/artists.html
Salerosa
An Afro-Cuban six-piece fused an eclectic mix of covers with Latino rhythms, and their choice of material was not the usual fare that a group of this nature might play. Tunes ranged from Beyoncé Knowles’ Déjà vu to the blues tune I Put a Spell on You.Jenni Malloy’s Bach project
This will be an album made up entirely of originals. Her innovative and original compositions have been inspired by some of Bach’s rhythmic and melodic ideas. They have been tweaked, squashed and tampered with, lifted from the confines of tradition and slammed into a jazz fuelled environment. We are really looking forward to recording this in March.
Each project should give musicians time and support to really work on their music, to think ideas and concepts through, work to get the best out of original compositions and/or arrangements often with the help of a producer, and rehearse with fellow musicians.
The label is also about promoting jazz musicians and their music to a wider audience, seeking out new venues in which to play and encouraging audiences that may not usually attend a ‘jazz gig’. A great deal of thought is put into marketing and publicity – how we make you and your music appeal to the public. This means photo shoots, interviews and time spent with our marketing officer to really get you as an artist into the public domain. Behind the scenes the design, marketing and publicity team is almost of equal importance as the musicians themselves.
Artists/bands are encouraged to be a part of this as much as they wish. Much work is done on the look and design of the CDs, tour posters/flyers and brochure copy that will be distributed to venues, promoters and national and local press. Tour booking (which has to take place at least 6 months before the first date) will mean convincing venues and promoters of the merits of the artist/band and putting together a tour of only ten venues can be an arduous task at this level.
The label is committed to producing excellent live music in performance and on record. There is no project of this nature in the UK that delivers such opportunities for jazz musicians and promotes jazz music to a wider audience.
