Shuffle Demons

Making a return to Yorkshire after their first sell out appearance 16 years ago are the Canadian band The Shuffle Demons. Described as "Demonic frenzy from Toronto!", playing everything from swing to rap, rock classics to bop themes (especially Monk and Rollins) all in the grand tradition of "sort of jazz". Unusual line-up of three sax with double bass and drums.

York Dune Jazz Festival & Jazz Workshops

13 - 15 July at York Theatre Royal
This years festival features Jazz Jamaica. 30 of the finest young jazz artists who between them have netted ten major music awards including the Mercury Music Prize and MOBO award for Best Jazz Act.

Workshops will be held on Saturday 15 August at York Theatre Royal at 12 noon - 2pm with Denys Baptiste (sax) and Andrew McCormack (piano). There are limited spaces for any aspiring jazz musicians who are roughly equivalent to Grade 5 basis. Application free via email to: david@creativeartspromotion.org tel: 01759 303454.

Hull Jazz Festival 2006

Now in its fourteenth year the festival starts on Saturday 29 July for a nine-day feast of world-class jazz in the city, headlined by Joyce - one of the great musical treasures of Brazil. The line-up for Hull's International Jazz Festival is as varied and exciting as ever, with the best in Brazilian, New Orleans, traditional, fusion, avant-garde, swing and much more.

Thirsk Jazz

Saturday 22nd July
Clarinet & tenor sax player / composer James Evans brings his band The Incredible String Four north to play on behalf of The Rotary Club of Thirsk as part of the Thirsk Festival 2006. James is a graduate of Leeds College of Music.

nuTALENT Showcase

Continuing our showcase scheme providing a platform for bands and musicians who are based in our region, the next event is taking place at the end of this month during the Hull Jazz Festival. Three excellent bands: The Lucas Dodd Quartet, The Inertia Trio and the Laura Fowles / Wayne Pollock Quartet.

Discus Records


Discus is the CD label for the music projects of Sheffield musicians Martin Archer and Mick Beck. They have a long standing interest in improvised music, for which there is a strong tradition in the Sheffield area. Many of the CDs available from Discus are live gig recordings. Their comprehensive web site has an impressive catalogue of CDs plus there's details of upcoming gigs.
