
Leeds-based jazz-rock group The Roller Trio have won this year's Peter Whittingham Award. Roller Trio consist of Leeds College of Music (LCM) graduate James Mainwaring, electronics/tenor saxophone, and current LCM student, guitarist Luke Wynter with Luke Reddin-Williams on drums. Jazzwise say "Roller Trio mix epic rock-edged riffs, angular sax explorations, brooding beats and haunting dub-step style electronics all shot through with heady improvisation".
Previous winners of the award have become established names on the UK jazz scene - Soweto Kinch, Led Bib, Gwilym Simcock and Empirical. Peter Whittingham was a medical expert with a love of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, George Shearing, and Oscar Peterson. After he died in 1987 and his family set up the trust in his memory.
